Dear Senator Corzine, As we start the third year of invasion and occupation of the nation of Iraq, you and your colleagues are considering to renew funding for the war that has resulted in over 1500 Americans killed, over 10,000 wounded and perhaps over 100,000 Iraqis killed. Most people here in the United States want the occupation to end. We want an immediate withdrawal of US forces. Among vocal opponents of the war, there has been a range of opinions as to how to respond to elections, ranging from reluctant support for the candidacy of John Kerry in 2004 to outright political opposition to the Democratic Party. It is clear to us in vote after vote, that the Democratic Party has been and continues to function as a pro-war institution. The Democratic Party was unable to unite against the initial authorization of invasion based upon the fraud of Weapons of Mass Destruction and false accusations of an Iraqi link to the 9-11 attacks. As the invasion was launched, the Democrats supported funding for the attack almost unanimously. Overwhelming support for the war by the Democratic Party was renewed last year in the $87 billion war allocation. Now, as the US Administration requests another $80 billion, it is appearing as if the Democratic Party is once again joining in full support for the war. Anti-war activists are moving toward a more political approach to the Democratic Party and its continuous support for the war. We call upon you to vote against the $80 billion war authorization, hands down. Furthermore, we are call upon you and your party to unite in opposition to the war authorization. Indeed I have signed a petition that calls for the Democratic Party to form an 80% block of opposition to the war authorization in both the House and the Senate. Furthermore, the petition announces our intention to work politically to build electoral opposition to the Democratic Party should it fall short of the 80% figure. You can go here to see the petition: http://endocciraq.org/Demand80Pct_NoTo80B.htm It is not enough for a small handful of Democrats to vote against this measure. We need to see overwhelming Democratic Party unity in opposition to the renewal of funding for the US war upon Iraq. The days of Carte Blanche support for the Democratic Party from the anti-war movement are over. Since we have nothing to show for the anti-war tilt toward the Democratic Party, a growing number of us are prepared to work to build an anti-war electoral convergence to oppose both the Republican and the Democratic parties. We are watching the vote on this authorization very closely! Sincerely, Bob Witanek |
