WORKSHOPS LOCALLY AND AROUND THE STATE ON
US OCCUPATION OF IRAQ
Calling themselves the Committee to End the
Occupation of Iraq, an organization plans to host slide show presentations and
discussions at various locations around the state of the NJ on the topic of the
US occupation of Iraq and their efforts to end it. The group,
largely made up of opponents of the US invasion of Iraq see their current
opposition to the US occupation of Iraq as a logical continuation of their
opposition to the US war on Iraq.
Committee member Robert Allen has assembled a
slide show presentation largely from publicly available pictures from the
occupation depicting what the group considers to be the very repressive nature
of the US and its allied occupying forces.
The group has set a goal to host as many as 20
such presentations around the state, at least 9 of which have already been
scheduled. An important feature of the workshops, according to committee
organizer Bob Witanek, is the free and open public discussion that follows each
slide presentation. Mr. Witanek states, “The slide presentation is designed for
a broad audience, not necessarily only for those who opposed the
US invasion. We encourage all to attend and to have an open mind and fully
participate in the discussion that follows, with questions, statements,
concerns. We are confident that there is a growing consensus that is
questioning and even opposing the US occupation and that through such
discussions, the consensus can be galvanized into a movement that will
effectively and eventually bring about the end of the occupation”
According to
the flyer being used by the group to promote the activity, “the
slides from internet news service photos provide a narrative of the US
occupation, along with a brief introduction of events and issues leading up to
the invasion. It challenges the most pervasive lies and misrepresentations
promoted in the US to justify the war on Iraq.
Among the issues addressed
are the ‘weapons of mass destruction’ hoax, the effects of the Shock and Awe
bombings and invasion, the rise of the Shiite political power in Iraq, the role
of the Kurdish parties, the failure of US occupation authorities to provide the
most rudimentary needs in Iraq, the control of Iraq's oil by the US, the role of
the United Nations and other nations in the Iraq occupation, along with the
aspirations of the Iraqi people for independence and national sovereignty.”
A complete list of
scheduled workshops, available at
